Friendster had over a million users within a year, but was soon overtaken following the 2003 launch of a similar-looking site, Myspace. Myspace mimicked Friendster’s features but pushed far harder for new users, and by 2006 was celebrating its 100 millionth account. It became the leading venue not just for communication with friends, but for exploring pop culture, discovering new bands, sharing music and video, and generally interfacing with the web via the most discerning of all search engines—other like-minded people.
Business social networking
Although most time spent on social networking sites is leisure time, the phenomenon is also having a profound effect on businesses. The world’s best-known business social networking site, LinkedIn, was launched in 2003 and as of January 2011 connected over 90 million profiles across the world. The increasing universality of sites such as LinkedIn—which includes facilities for full career histories, online CVs, personal details, and most importantly the ability to connect to, find, contact and recommend other people in related fields—is now rapidly transforming the recruitment processes of many companies, and attitudes toward finding employment. Online self-presentation is becoming a core skill in many fields, today—as is ensuring that potentially unimpressive details of your life are not publicly available to any potential employer doing a quick sweep of other social networking sites.
